About the Book Mr. Popper's Penguins

Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Florence and Richard Atwater is a charming children’s book that tells the story of Mr. Popper, a house painter with a fascination for Arctic adventures. Living in the small town of Stillwater with his wife and two children, Mr. Popper dreams of exploring faraway places, especially the North and South Poles.

One day, Mr. Popper receives an unexpected gift from Admiral Drake, a famous Antarctic explorer—a penguin named Captain Cook. As Captain Cook becomes part of the Popper household, he soon falls ill from loneliness. To remedy this, Mr. Popper acquires another penguin, Greta, from an aquarium. The two penguins quickly become a family, producing ten baby penguins, turning the Popper home into a bustling penguin habitat.

To manage the growing brood, Mr. Popper converts his basement into a cold environment suitable for the penguins. However, the cost of maintaining the penguins becomes overwhelming. To support his new family members, Mr. Popper creates a stage show featuring the penguins, which becomes a nationwide sensation.

The story is filled with humor and heartwarming moments as Mr. Popper and his family navigate the challenges and joys of living with a dozen penguins.
