About the Book Nightjohn

Nightjohn by Gary Paulsen is a powerful young adult historical fiction novel set in the American South before the Civil War. The story is narrated by Sarny, a 12-year-old slave girl living on the Waller plantation. Her life changes dramatically when a new slave named John, who she calls Nightjohn, arrives at the plantation.

Nightjohn is unique because he knows how to read and write, skills that are forbidden for slaves. Despite the immense danger, he begins to teach Sarny the alphabet and how to read and write in secret night classes. Through these lessons, Sarny gains a sense of empowerment and hope, even as she faces the brutal realities of slavery.

The novel explores themes of education as a means of resistance, the brutality of slavery, and the importance of knowledge and literacy. Paulsen’s vivid and unflinching portrayal of the harsh conditions on the plantation highlights the resilience and courage of those who sought to learn despite the risks.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
