About the Book No Talking

No Talking by Andrew Clements is a delightful children’s novel that centers around a unique challenge at Laketon Elementary School. The story follows fifth-graders Dave Packer and Lynsey Burgess, who initiate a two-day contest to see which gender can talk the least. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s practice of silence, Dave proposes the challenge after realizing how much everyone talks.

The competition quickly spreads, causing a stir among teachers and staff who are puzzled by the sudden quietness of the usually noisy fifth-graders. The students are allowed to speak only three words at a time when addressed by teachers, leading to creative and concise communication.

Throughout the contest, the students learn valuable lessons about the power of words, self-control, and the importance of listening. The novel humorously explores themes of friendship, rivalry, and the impact of silence, making it an engaging read for both children and adults.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
