About the Book Old Yeller

Set in the late 1860s, Old Yeller follows the adventures of a young boy named Travis Coates and his family as they navigate the challenges of frontier life. When Travis's father leaves to drive cattle to Kansas, Travis is left as the man of the house and must help his mother and younger brother, Arliss, manage their farm.

Their lives take an unexpected turn when a stray dog, Old Yeller, shows up at their homestead. Initially seen as a nuisance, Old Yeller soon earns his place within the family by proving his bravery and loyalty. From fending off wild animals to offering companionship, Yeller becomes an indispensable part of the Coates family.

However, the harsh realities of frontier life soon test the bonds between boy and dog. When a rabid wolf threatens their livelihood, Old Yeller steps in to protect his family, leading to a heart-wrenching decision that Travis must make. The story concludes with Travis's painful but necessary choice, highlighting the themes of duty, love, and the passage from adolescence to adulthood.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
