About the Book On the Banks of Plum Creek

On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder is the fourth book in her beloved “Little House” series. This semi-autobiographical novel, published in 1937, follows the Ingalls family as they settle near Plum Creek in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, during the 1870.

The story begins with the Ingalls family moving from Kansas to Minnesota. Pa trades their horses for a dugout house and two oxen. Laura, her older sister Mary, and younger sister Carrie explore their new surroundings, marveling at the wild plum trees and the beauty of the creek.

Life on Plum Creek is filled with both joys and challenges. The family works hard to farm the land, hoping for a bountiful wheat harvest. However, they face numerous hardships, including a devastating locust plague that destroys their crops and a severe blizzard that delays Pa’s return home. Despite these difficulties, the Ingalls family remains resilient, finding strength in their love for each other and their pioneer spirit.

The novel also highlights Laura and Mary’s experiences at school, where they encounter the town storekeeper’s daughter, Nellie Oleson, who looks down on them for being "country girls." The story captures the essence of pioneer life, emphasizing the importance of family, hard work, and perseverance.
