About the Book On the Far Side of the Mountain
On the Far Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George is a middle-grade novel that picks up the story of Sam Gribley, who has been living in the Catskill Mountains for two years. This book is a sequel to George’s Newbery Medal-winning novel, My Side of the Mountain.
In this installment, Sam’s tranquil life is upended when a conservation officer seizes his peregrine falcon, Frightful, due to the illegality of keeping an endangered species without a permit. Concurrently, Sam’s younger sister, Alice, vanishes from their mountaintop home.
Determined to find Alice, Sam sets off on a quest, following the clues she has left behind. Throughout his journey, he faces numerous challenges and makes new friends.
