About the Book Once a Mouse

Once a Mouse by Marcia Brown is a beautifully illustrated retelling of an Indian fable from the Hitopadesa. The story follows a small mouse whose life is saved by a kind hermit. To protect the mouse from various predators, the hermit uses magic to transform the mouse into progressively larger and more powerful animals: first a cat, then a dog, and finally a majestic tiger.

However, as the mouse-turned-tiger becomes more powerful, he also grows vain and ungrateful, forgetting his humble origins. The hermit, disappointed by the tiger’s arrogance, ultimately decides to turn him back into a mouse. The story emphasizes themes of gratitude, humility, and the dangers of pride.

Marcia Brown’s woodcut illustrations add a magical touch to this timeless tale, which earned her a Caldecott Medal.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
