About the Book A Parrot in the Oven: Mi Vida

A Parrot in the Oven: Mi Vida by Victor Martinez is a coming-of-age novel that follows the life of Manuel “Manny” Hernandez, a young Mexican-American boy growing up in the public housing projects of California’s Central Valley. The story is semi-autobiographical and captures the struggles and aspirations of Manny as he navigates the challenges of adolescence.

Manny’s family is plagued by financial difficulties, with his father out of work and his mother struggling to make ends meet. The novel explores the dynamics within his family, including his father’s abusive behavior and his mother’s resilience. Manny’s older brother, Nardo, is reluctant to work, while his sister, Magda, faces her own set of challenges.

Throughout the novel, Manny struggles with his identity and the pressures of his environment. He contemplates joining a gang to gain respect and prove his worth, but ultimately seeks a different path. The title of the book comes from a metaphor used by Manny’s father, who compares Manny to a parrot in an oven—someone who is naive and unaware of the harsh realities around him.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
