About the Book Red Kayak

Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings delves into themes of friendship, guilt, and the consequences of our actions. Set in a small town on the Chesapeake Bay, it tells the story of Brady Parks, a 13-year-old boy who faces a moral dilemma after a tragic accident.

Brady lives in Maryland with his parents and spends his days fishing and repairing boats. His life takes a dramatic turn when his new neighbors, the DiAngelos, move in. One day, Brady and his friends, Digger and J.T., see a red kayak heading out onto the river in bad weather. They decide not to warn the kayaker, assuming it’s Mr. DiAngelo. Later, they learn that Mrs. DiAngelo and her young son, Ben, were in the kayak, which capsized, leading to Ben’s death.

Brady is haunted by guilt and becomes determined to help the DiAngelo family. While cleaning their boathouse, he discovers a drill with red paint, realizing that Digger and J.T. drilled holes in the kayak as a prank. Brady faces a tough decision: protect his friends or reveal the truth.

Red Kayak is a thought-provoking novel that encourages readers to consider the complexity of human emotions and the impact of our actions. It’s a compelling read for anyone interested in stories about personal growth and moral challenges.
