About the Book Red Scarf Girl

Red Scarf Girl by Ji-li Jiang is a memoir that recounts the author’s experiences during China’s Cultural Revolution. The story begins in 1966 when Ji-li is a bright and ambitious 12-year-old girl who believes in the Communist Party and its leader, Chairman Mao. However, her life takes a dramatic turn when the Cultural Revolution begins, and she discovers that her family is considered part of the “black class” due to her grandfather’s status as a landlord.

As the revolution intensifies, Ji-li faces increasing pressure to denounce her family and conform to the new political ideology. Her family’s home is raided, her father is detained, and she is ostracized by her peers. Despite these challenges, Ji-li remains loyal to her family and struggles to reconcile her beliefs with the harsh realities around her.

The memoir highlights the impact of political turmoil on personal lives and the difficult choices Ji-li must make between her loyalty to her family and her desire to succeed in the new society. It is a powerful coming-of-age story that provides a unique perspective on a tumultuous period in Chinese history.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
