About the Book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr is a touching historical fiction novel based on the true story of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl from Hiroshima, Japan. The story begins nine years after the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, with Sadako living a vibrant life filled with dreams of joining her junior high school’s racing team. However, her life takes a tragic turn when she is diagnosed with leukemia, often referred to as “the atom bomb disease.”

Inspired by a Japanese legend that promises a wish to anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes, Sadako begins folding cranes with the hope of recovering from her illness. Despite her declining health, Sadako’s determination and hope shine through as she works towards her goal. The novel explores themes of war, grief, hope, and the resilience of the human spirit. Sadako’s story has become a symbol of peace and has inspired many around the world.
