About the Book Sam, Bangs, and Moonshine

Sam, Bangs & Moonshine by Evaline Ness is a captivating children’s book that tells the story of Samantha, known as Sam, a fisherman’s daughter with a vivid imagination. Living on an island near a large harbor, Sam often spins elaborate tales, which her father calls “moonshine.” These stories, while enchanting, lead to real-life consequences when her friend Thomas and her cat Bangs are put in danger due to her fabrications.

The narrative follows Sam as she learns the important lesson of distinguishing between fantasy and reality. Through her experiences, she comes to understand the value of truth and the potential harm that can come from unchecked imagination.

The book, which won the 1967 Caldecott Medal, is celebrated for its beautiful illustrations and its poignant message about the balance between creativity and honesty.
