About the Book Schooled

Schooled by Gordon Korman is a humorous and heartwarming middle-grade novel that follows the story of Capricorn “Cap” Anderson, a 13-year-old boy raised on a secluded hippie commune called Garland Farm. When his grandmother, Rain, falls and breaks her hip, Cap is thrust into the modern world for the first time, moving in with a social worker named Mrs. Donnelly and her daughter, Sophie.

Cap’s transition to public school is anything but smooth. His unconventional upbringing makes him an easy target for bullies, particularly Zach Powers, who nominates Cap as the eighth-grade president as a cruel joke. However, Cap’s genuine kindness, naivety, and unique perspective on life gradually wins over his classmates. Despite numerous challenges, Cap’s influence transforms the school environment, teaching valuable lessons about acceptance, individuality, and the power of kindness.

The novel is told from multiple perspectives, providing a rich and varied view of Cap’s impact on those around him. Through humor and heartfelt moments, Schooled explores themes of belonging, resilience, and the importance of staying true to oneself.
