About the Book  Scorpions by Walter Dean Myers

Scorpions follows the story of 12-year-old Jamal Hicks, who is struggling with the pressures of growing up in Harlem. When his older brother Randy, a former leader of the Scorpions gang, is imprisoned, Jamal is thrust into a world of tough decisions.

Jamal is approached by Mack, one of Randy's friends, who urges him to take over Randy's position in the gang. Initially resistant, Jamal faces mounting pressures from Mack and others around him. His best friend, Tito, tries to support him, but Jamal's growing involvement with the gang tests their friendship.

The tension escalates as Jamal struggles with the gang's violent lifestyle while yearning for a better future. The novel reaches its climax when Jamal finds himself at a crossroads—choosing between the life he wants and the harsh reality surrounding him.

Scorpions is a Newbery Medal Honor book.
