About the Book Shades of Gray

Shades of Gray by Carolyn Reeder is a historical fiction novel set in the South during the Reconstruction era following the Civil War. The story follows twelve-year-old Will Page, who becomes an orphan after losing his family to the war and its aftermath. Will is sent to live with his Uncle Jed, whom he initially despises for not fighting for the Confederacy.

As Will adjusts to his new life on his uncle’s farm, he struggles with his grief and anger. Through his interactions with Uncle Jed, Aunt Ella, and cousin Meg, Will learns valuable lessons about courage, hard work, and the complexities of human nature. He begins to understand that bravery comes in many forms and that people and situations are often more nuanced than they appear.

The novel explores themes of loss, resilience, and the importance of seeing beyond black-and-white perspectives. Will’s journey from bitterness to understanding highlights the necessity of empathy and the power of personal growth.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
