About the Book Sing Down the Moon

Sing Down the Moon by Scott O’Dell is a historical novel set in the 1860s, focusing on the resilience and hope of a young Navajo girl named Bright Morning. The story begins in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, where Bright Morning lives a peaceful life as a shepherd. However, her world is turned upside down when she and her friend Running Bird are captured by Spanish slavers and sold into servitude.

After a daring escape, Bright Morning returns home, only to face further hardship as white soldiers force her people to endure the Long Walk to a reservation in Bosque Redondo, New Mexico. The novel vividly portrays the struggles and injustices faced by the Navajo people during this forced relocation. Despite the adversity, Bright Morning’s determination and the support of her community shine through as she and her husband, Tall Boy, eventually escape the reservation to start anew in their homeland.

The book highlights themes of resilience, cultural identity, and the unbreakable spirit of the Navajo people, making it a poignant and educational read for young audiences.
