About the Book Something Upstairs

Something Upstairs by Avi is a young adult novel that blends historical fiction with supernatural elements. The story follows twelve-year-old Kenny Huldorf, who moves from Los Angeles to Providence, Rhode Island. In his new home, Kenny discovers a ghost named Caleb, a former slave who was murdered in the house over 200 years ago. Caleb is trapped in the attic, unable to move on until his murder is avenged.

Kenny and Caleb form an unlikely friendship, and together they embark on a time-traveling adventure to uncover the truth behind Caleb’s death. As they delve into the past, Kenny learns about the harsh realities of slavery and the complexities of history. The novel explores themes of justice, friendship, and the impact of the past on the present.
