About the Book Soup

Soup by Robert Newton Peck is a charming children’s novel set in the 1930s in a small town in Vermont. The story revolves around two boys, Robert (the narrator) and his mischievous best friend, Luther, better known as “Soup.” The novel is a collection of humorous and heartwarming episodes from their daily lives, showcasing their adventures and the trouble they often find themselves in.

Soup is a well-meaning but scheming character who constantly comes up with elaborate plans that invariably land both boys in trouble. Despite their mischief, the bond between Robert and Soup is strong, and they always look out for each other. The novel also features other characters like the school bully Janice Riker and Robert’s crush, Norma Jean Bissel.

The book captures the essence of childhood friendship and the simple joys and challenges of growing up in a rural setting during the Great Depression. It’s a nostalgic look at a bygone era, filled with humor and life lessons.
