About the Book Stone Fox

Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner is a heartwarming children’s novel that tells the story of Little Willy, a ten-year-old boy living on a farm in Wyoming with his grandfather and his loyal dog, Searchlight. When his grandfather falls ill and is unable to work, Willy discovers that they owe $500 in back taxes and risk losing their farm. Determined to save their home, Willy decides to enter the National Dogsled Race, which offers a $500 prize.

The race is fiercely competitive, and Willy’s main rival is Stone Fox, a Native American man who has never lost a race and is using the prize money to buy back land for his people. Despite the odds, Willy and Searchlight give it their all. The story reaches an emotional climax when Searchlight’s heart gives out just before the finish line. In a surprising act of compassion, Stone Fox stops the other racers and allows Willy to carry Searchlight across the finish line, securing the prize money and saving the farm.

The novel explores themes of determination, loyalty, and the power of kindness, making it a touching and memorable read for young audiences.
