About the Book Stone Soup

Stone Soup by Marcia Brown is a classic children’s picture book that retells an old French folktale about the power of community and sharing. The story begins with three hungry soldiers who arrive in a village, seeking food and shelter. The villagers, wary and protective of their meager supplies, refuse to share anything with the strangers.

Undeterred, the soldiers come up with a clever plan. They announce that they can make soup from a stone and ask for a large pot of water. Intrigued and curious, the villagers gather around as the soldiers drop a stone into the pot and begin to stir. As the soldiers talk about how delicious the soup will be, they casually mention that it would taste even better with a few additional ingredients. One by one, the villagers contribute vegetables, meat, and seasonings, transforming the simple pot of water into a rich and hearty soup.

In the end, the entire village enjoys a communal feast, and the soldiers reveal that the magic was not in the stone, but in the villagers’ willingness to share and work together. The story highlights themes of generosity, cooperation, and the idea that by coming together, people can create something wonderful out of nothing.

This timeless tale, beautifully illustrated by Marcia Brown, teaches valuable lessons about the importance of community and the joy of sharing.
