About the Book Taking Sides

Taking Sides by Gary Soto is a novel that follows the story of Lincoln Mendoza, a 12-year-old boy who moves from San Francisco’s Mission District to the suburban city of Sycamore. As he adjusts to his new life, Lincoln faces challenges related to his cultural identity and loyalty. He misses the diversity of his old neighborhood and his friend Tony, and he feels out of place in his new school, where he is one of the few students of color.

The upcoming basketball game against his former school’s team brings Lincoln’s internal conflict to a head, as he struggles with the idea of playing against his old teammates.

Through his relationships with his new friend James, a girl named Monica, and the discovery of his stolen TV in a thrift shop, Lincoln navigates the complexities of friendship, loyalty, and identity.

The novel addresses themes of racial prejudice, integration, and the importance of not just taking sides but finding a way to bring together different parts of one’s life.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
