About the Book Tess of the d[Urbervilles

Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy follows Tess Durbeyfield, a young woman navigating the strict societal codes of Victorian England. Her life takes a dramatic turn when her family discovers a potential connection to the prestigious d’Urbervilles. In pursuit of a better future, Tess is sent to connect with this affluent branch of her family, only to find their wealth is rooted in commerce, not nobility.

Tess encounters Alec d’Urberville, whose affections lead to her downfall and the birth of her ill-fated child, Sorrow. Later, Tess meets and marries Angel Clare, but her past overshadows their union, resulting in Angel’s departure to Brazil and Tess’s subsequent desolation. Ultimately, Tess’s struggle against societal judgment ends in tragedy, as she is executed for an act of desperation, committed in the name of love, with Angel returning too late to alter her fate.

Thomas Hardy’s work critically dissects the moral fabric of Victorian society, scrutinizing class disparities and the challenges faced by women. The novel questions the role of destiny, societal pressures, and the pursuit of individual contentment amidst inflexible social norms.
