About the Book Tex

Tex by S.E. Hinton is a young adult novel set in the 1970s in small-town Oklahoma. It follows the story of Tex McCormick, a carefree teenager who lives with his older brother, Mason, and their mostly absent father. The novel opens with Tex’s distress over Mason selling his beloved horse, Negrito, due to financial constraints. As the brothers struggle with their father’s absence and the responsibilities thrust upon them, Tex’s coming-of-age journey is marked by rural life challenges, the exploration of feminist ideas, and the quest for personal identity.

Tex’s adventures with his best friend, Johnny Collins, and Johnny’s sister, Jamie, lead to trouble both in and out of school. The narrative delves into Tex’s struggles with family dynamics, poverty, and societal pressures, while also highlighting the importance of friendship, loyalty, and hope.

The novel was well-received, becoming a finalist for The National Book Award for Children’s Books and winning the American Library Association’s Margaret A. Edwards award for young adult literature. It was also adapted into a popular movie, further cementing its place in young adult fiction.

This Page Is Under Construction

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
