About the Book The Awakening

Set in the late 19th century, The Awakening follows the story of Edna Pontellier as she navigates the constraints of Victorian society.

While vacationing in Grand Isle, Edna begins to question her life's roles as wife and mother, leading her on a path of self-discovery and, ultimately, rebellion against societal norms.

Edna’s realization that she wants more from life than the traditional role of motherhood and wifedom marks the beginning of her awakening. Throughout the novel, she seeks independence and self-expression, indulging in an affair and pursuing her passion for art.

The novel daringly portrays her emotional turmoil and the consequences of her choices, culminating in an ending that continues to provoke discussion among readers.
