About the Book     The Big Wave

The Big Wave is set in a small Japanese fishing village and revolves around two young boys, Kino and Jiya, whose lives are deeply intertwined. Kino lives on a farm on the mountainside, overlooking the sea, while Jiya resides in the fishing village below.

The story begins with the tranquil life of the village, where the daily rhythms of farming and fishing are uninterrupted. However, this sense of serenity is shattered when a massive tsunami, referred to as "the big wave," strikes the village. Kino witnesses the devastating force of nature from his vantage point on the mountain, while Jiya tragically loses his family in the catastrophe.

After the disaster, Jiya comes to live with Kino's family, who welcome him with open arms. The narrative then follows Jiya's journey of healing and the strength he finds in friendship, love, and the support of his new family. As Jiya grows older, he must confront the lingering fears left by the tsunami and make a courageous decision to return to the sea and rebuild his life.

Nature's Power and Beauty: Buck's narrative vividly illustrates the dual nature of the sea: its breathtaking beauty and its terrifying power. This theme encourages students to respect nature and reflect on the delicate balance between humans and the natural world.

Courage and Choice: Jiya's decision to return to the sea and rebuild his life demonstrates courage and the power of making choices. This theme explores the idea that while we cannot control external events, we can choose how we respond to them.
