About the Book The Breadwinner

This first book in Deborah Ellis’s riveting Breadwinner series is an award-winning novel about loyalty, survival, families and friendship under extraordinary circumstances during the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan in the late 1990s.

The Breadwinner opens with a snapshot of Parvana's life in Kabul, Afghanistan. She's an ordinary girl facing extraordinary circumstances. The Taliban have imposed strict rules that severely restrict the lives of women and girls, including banning them from attending school and even going outside without a male escort. Parvana's father, a former teacher, now earns a meager living as a letter reader and writer in the marketplace.

Parvana's family consists of her mother, her older sister Nooria, her younger sister Maryam, and her baby brother Ali. The family lives in a single room apartment, stripped of the comforts they once knew. Despite the hardships, Parvana finds solace in the stories her father tells about Afghanistan's

One day, the family's fragile sense of normalcy is shattered when Taliban soldiers burst into their home and arrest Parvana's father. Without him, the family is left in a precarious situation. Parvana's mother attempts to seek help from a distant relative, but the harsh realities of Taliban rule make it impossible for women to travel alone or seek employment.

Faced with the dire prospect of starvation, Parvana decides to take drastic action. With her mother's assistance, she disguises herself as a boy, cutting her hair and wearing her deceased brother's clothes. This transformation allows her to venture outside and take on the role of the family's breadwinner.

In her new identity as "Kaseem," Parvana returns to the bustling marketplace where her father once worked. She finds work doing various tasks, such as reading letters, fetching water, and selling small items. Through these experiences, she encounters a diverse array of people, each with their own stories of struggle and survival.

Parvana's encounters in the marketplace offer a glimpse into the resilience and resourcefulness of the Afghan people. She meets Shauzia, another girl disguised as a boy, who becomes her friend and confidante. Together, they dream of escaping to a better life, free from the oppression they face daily.
