About the Book The Education of Little Tree

The Education of Little Tree is a semi-autobiographical novel that tells the story of a young orphaned boy named Little Tree. Set in the 1930s, the book follows Little Tree as he goes to live with his Cherokee grandparents in the mountains of Tennessee. This new life introduces him to the teachings of his grandparents and the profound wisdom of Cherokee traditions.

One of the most captivating aspects of the story is its vivid portrayal of nature. The mountains, streams, and forests become more than just a backdrop; they play a crucial role in Little Tree's education. The detailed descriptions of the natural world draw readers in, making them feel as if they, too, are part of Little Tree's adventures.

The bond between Little Tree and his grandparents is heartwarming. His grandfather, Granpa, teaches him the ways of the mountain people, from moonshining to respecting nature. His grandmother, Granma, imparts the spiritual and cultural teachings of the Cherokee. Together, they provide Little Tree with a well-rounded education that blends the practical with the philosophical.
