About the Book The Freedom Writers Diary

The story begins in 1994 when Erin Gruwell, a young and idealistic teacher, takes on her first teaching assignment at Wilson High School. She is assigned to teach freshmen English in Room 203, a class composed of students from diverse backgrounds, many of whom are living in poverty and facing various forms of social injustice. Gruwell quickly realizes that traditional teaching methods won't work for her students, who are disengaged and distrustful of authority figures.

Determined to reach her students, Gruwell introduces them to literature that mirrors their own experiences, such as Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl and Zlata Filipović's Zlata's Diary. She encourages them to write their own diaries, providing a safe space for them to express their thoughts and emotions. This exercise not only improves their writing skills but also helps them process their experiences and begin to heal.

As the students become more engaged, their academic performance improves, and they start to see themselves in a new light. They form a close-knit community, calling themselves the "Freedom Writers" after the Freedom Riders of the Civil Rights Movement. Gruwell's dedication extends beyond the classroom as she takes her students on educational trips, helps them publish their diaries, and even supports them in achieving higher education.

This Page Is Under Construction

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
