About the Book The Glass Castle

The Glass Castle opens with a striking scene of Jeannette Walls as an adult, observing her mother rummaging through trash in New York City. This image sets the stage for a memoir that oscillates between past and present, revealing a life defined by instability and hardship.

Jeannette's childhood was far from conventional. Her father, Rex Walls, was a brilliant yet deeply flawed man with grandiose dreams and a severe alcohol addiction. He often regaled his children with tales of a utopian glass castle he promised to build one day. Meanwhile, her mother, Rose Mary, was an artist who prioritized her creative pursuits over the practical needs of her family.

The Walls family led a nomadic existence, frequently moving from place to place, often without sufficient food or basic necessities. Despite the chaos, Rex instilled in his children a sense of adventure and an unconventional education, teaching them about science, math, and literature. However, his erratic behavior and broken promises led to a tumultuous upbringing marked by neglect and poverty.

Jeannette's teenage years were particularly challenging as she struggled with the stark realities of her parents' shortcomings. Eventually, she and her siblings made the difficult decision to escape their parents' influence and move to New York City, where they sought stability and a chance at a better life. Through sheer determination and hard work, Jeannette carved out a successful career as a journalist.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
