About the Book The Help

The story begins with Skeeter Phelan, a young white woman who returns home after college with dreams of becoming a writer. Unlike her peers, Skeeter is disturbed by the racial injustices around her. When she learns that her beloved maid, Constantine, has mysteriously disappeared, she decides to write a book from the perspective of the black maids working in the homes of Southern families.

Aibileen Clark, one of the primary narrators, is a black maid raising her seventeenth white child. Her nurturing character brings warmth and depth to the story. Despite her fears, Aibileen agrees to share her experiences with Skeeter, marking the beginning of a courageous collaboration.

Minny Jackson, another vital character, is known for her sass and exceptional cooking skills. She too joins Skeeter’s project, despite the risk of retribution. Through Minny, readers witness the everyday struggles and acts of defiance that shape her life, including her fraught relationship with her employer, Hilly Holbrook.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
