About the Book The House of the Scorpion

The House of the Scorpion is set in the near future in a country called Opium, located between the United States (referred to as Aztlán) and what remains of Mexico. This nation is ruled by powerful drug lords, and at the heart of this empire is El Patrón, a 143-year-old drug lord who has extended his life by harvesting organs from his own clones.

Matteo "Matt" Alacrán is one such clone, created specifically to provide spare parts for El Patrón. Raised in isolation, Matt’s early years are spent under the care of Celia, a loving housekeeper in El Patrón's estate. Unaware of his clone status, Matt faces severe prejudice and mistreatment when his true nature is revealed.

Through a series of harrowing experiences, Matt learns about the dark realities of his existence and the world around him. He discovers that he is not merely a vessel for spare parts but a human being with his own thoughts, feelings, and desires. Matt’s struggle for identity and autonomy forms the crux of the story.

As Matt matures, he plans his escape from Opium. His journey is fraught with danger, but he eventually finds allies who help him understand his worth beyond being a clone. The novel concludes with Matt returning to Opium, this time with a mission to dismantle the corrupt system established by El Patrón and to build a just society.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
