About the Book The Hundred Dresses

The Hundred Dresses centers around a young girl named Wanda Petronski, a Polish immigrant living in a small American town. Wanda is quiet and often stays to herself, making her an easy target for her classmates' teasing.

The teasing intensifies when Wanda claims to own one hundred dresses, despite wearing the same faded blue dress to school every day. Her classmates, particularly a girl named Peggy, mock her relentlessly, doubting her claim.

Maddie, Peggy’s best friend, feels uncomfortable with the teasing but does not speak up, fearing she might become the new target. The story unfolds as Maddie struggles with her conscience, questioning her silence in the face of Wanda’s humiliation.

Everything changes when Wanda submits her entry for the class art contest. To everyone's astonishment, her drawings feature one hundred beautifully designed dresses, proving her earlier claim. Despite her talent, Wanda and her family have moved away, driven out by the unkindness they faced.

Maddie and Peggy, filled with guilt and regret, attempt to make amends. They write a letter to Wanda, expressing their apologies and admiration for her artwork. Wanda responds graciously, forgiving them and revealing that she has left the drawings for her classmates as a gift.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
