About the Book The Killer Angels

The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara is a historical novel that vividly recounts the Battle of Gettysburg, a pivotal event in the American Civil War. The story spans from July 1 to July 3, 1863, and is told from the perspectives of key military leaders from both the Union and Confederate forces.

The novel opens with a Confederate spy informing General James Longstreet and General Robert E. Lee about the proximity of the Union army. This revelation sets the stage for the impending battle. The narrative then shifts to Union Colonel Joshua L. Chamberlain, who inspires mutineers from the Second Maine to join his regiment, the Twentieth Maine.

As the battle unfolds, the novel delves into the strategic decisions and personal struggles of the leaders. General John Buford of the Union cavalry secures high ground at Gettysburg, recognizing its strategic importance. Meanwhile, General Lee and Longstreet debate the merits of offensive versus defensive tactics, with Lee favoring an aggressive approach.

The climax of the novel centers on the intense fighting at Little Round Top, where Chamberlain’s leadership plays a crucial role in holding the Union line. The novel concludes with the devastating Pickett’s Charge, a failed Confederate assault that marks a turning point in the war.
