About the Book The Kite Rider

The Kite Rider by Geraldine McCaughrean is a novel set in 13th-century China. The story follows Haoyou, a young boy whose father is killed in a tragic accident while testing the wind with a kite. This event sets off a chain of adventures for Haoyou as he seeks to protect his family from the malicious Di Chou, who desires to marry Haoyou’s mother.

Haoyou’s journey takes a dramatic turn when he becomes a kite rider for the Jade Circus, performing daring stunts high in the sky. Alongside his intelligent cousin Mipeng, who works as a medium, Haoyou travels with the circus, encountering various challenges and making new friends. The novel explores themes of bravery, family loyalty, and the struggle for freedom against the backdrop of Kublai Khan’s reign.

Through Haoyou’s perspective, readers are immersed in the vibrant cultural landscape of ancient China, witnessing the emotional and spiritual development of a boy navigating extraordinary challenges.
