About the Book The Land

The Land by Mildred D. Taylor is a compelling historical novel that explores themes of identity, racism, and perseverance. Set in the post-Civil War era, the story follows Paul-Edward Logan, the son of a white plantation owner and a former slave. Paul, who is of mixed race, faces unique challenges as he navigates a world divided by race.

Paul grows up on his father’s plantation in Georgia, where he is treated differently from both his white and black peers. His close relationship with his white half-brother, Robert, and his friendship with Mitchell, a black boy who initially bullies him, highlight the complexities of his identity. As Paul matures, he becomes determined to own land, a symbol of independence and self-worth.

Throughout the novel, Paul encounters numerous obstacles, including racial discrimination and betrayal. His journey takes him from Georgia to Mississippi, where he works in various jobs, including as a horseman and a furniture maker. Despite the hardships, Paul remains focused on his dream of owning land.

Paul’s perseverance pays off when he makes a deal to clear timberland in exchange for ownership of the land. This achievement, however, comes with its own set of challenges, as Paul must navigate the treacherous social and economic landscape of the time.
