About the Book The Legend of the Bluebonnet

A young Comanche girl named She-Who-Is-Alone lives with her tribe in Texas during a time of great drought and famine. The tribe believes that they are being punished by the Great Spirits for taking too much from the earth without giving anything back. They are told that in order to bring rain and restore balance, they must make a significant sacrifice.

She-Who-Is-Alone possesses a beloved doll, the last memento of her family who perished in the drought. This doll is adorned with blue feathers, making it a unique and precious possession. Understanding the gravity of the situation, She-Who-Is-Alone decides to offer her doll as a sacrifice to the Great Spirits. She places it on the burning pyre and prays for her people’s suffering to end.

The next morning, the land is covered with beautiful blue flowers—the first bluebonnets—and rain begins to fall, signifying that the Great Spirits have accepted her sacrifice. She-Who-Is-Alone is now known as One-Who-Dearly-Loved-Her-People, honoring her courageous act that brought relief to her tribe.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
