About the Book The Merchant of Venice

The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare is a play that intertwines themes of love, justice, and prejudice. The story revolves around Antonio, a Venetian merchant, who borrows money from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, to help his friend Bassanio court the wealthy heiress Portia. Shylock, harboring a grudge against Antonio, demands a pound of Antonio’s flesh as collateral if the loan is not repaid.

In Belmont, Portia is bound by her father’s will to marry the man who chooses the correct one of three caskets. Bassanio successfully chooses the lead casket and wins Portia’s hand. Meanwhile, Antonio’s ships are reported lost at sea, leaving him unable to repay Shylock. Shylock insists on his bond, leading to a dramatic court scene where Portia, disguised as a lawyer, cleverly saves Antonio by pointing out that Shylock can take his pound of flesh but not spill any of his blood.

The play concludes with the lovers reunited and Shylock’s fate sealed, highlighting the complex interplay of mercy and justice.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
