About the Book The Moves Make the Man

The Moves Make the Man by Bruce Brooks is a compelling young adult novel set in the early 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement. The story follows Jerome Foxworthy, an African-American boy who becomes the only black student at a newly integrated school. Jerome, also known as Jayfox, befriends Braxton Rivers III, or Bix, a talented but troubled white boy.

The novel explores themes of racism, friendship, and personal growth. Jerome’s passion for basketball and Bix’s skill in baseball bring them together, but their bond is tested by their different backgrounds and personal struggles. Jerome’s journey is marked by his determination to succeed despite the racial prejudices he faces, while Bix struggles with family issues and his own rigid sense of honesty.

Through their friendship, both boys learn valuable lessons about trust, resilience, and the complexities of human relationships.
