About the Book The Natural

The Natural by Bernard Malamud is a compelling novel that follows the story of Roy Hobbs, a baseball prodigy whose career is marred by a tragic event.

Roy Hobbs, a nineteen-year-old with extraordinary talent, is on his way to Chicago to try out for the Chicago Cubs. During his journey, he impresses a famous baseball player, “The Whammer,” by striking him out in a carnival game. However, Roy’s promising career is abruptly halted when a mysterious woman named Harriet Bird shoots him.

Fifteen years later, Roy resurfaces as a rookie for the struggling New York Knights. Despite his age, he quickly proves his worth with his incredible batting skills, using a bat he carved himself called “Wonderboy.” Roy’s performance revitalizes the team, but he faces numerous challenges, including a corrupt team owner, a manipulative journalist, and his obsession with Memo Paris, the girlfriend of a deceased teammate.

As Roy’s fame grows, he struggles with personal demons and the corrupting influence of success. The novel explores themes of heroism, ambition, and the complexities of human nature.
