About the Book The Once and Future King

The Once and Future King by T.H. White is a retelling of the legend of King Arthur, divided into four parts, each focusing on different stages of Arthur’s life and reign.

  • The Sword in the Stone: This part introduces us to a young boy named Wart, who is raised by Sir Ector and tutored by the eccentric magician Merlyn. Wart learns valuable lessons about leadership and morality through various magical transformations. Eventually, Wart pulls a sword from a stone, revealing himself as the rightful King Arthur.
  • The Queen of Air and Darkness: Now King Arthur, he faces rebellion from King Lot of Orkney. Arthur’s half-sister, Morgause, seduces him, leading to the birth of Mordred, who will later become his nemesis. Arthur establishes the Knights of the Round Table to promote justice and equality.
  • The Ill-Made Knight: This section focuses on Sir Lancelot, Arthur’s greatest knight, and his complex relationship with Queen Guenever. Lancelot’s internal struggles and his affair with Guenever create tension and conflict within Camelot.
  • The Candle in the Wind: The final part deals with the downfall of Arthur’s kingdom. Mordred’s betrayal and the resulting civil war lead to the tragic end of Camelot. Arthur reflects on his life and legacy, hoping that his ideals will endure.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
