About the Book The Samurai's Tale

The Samurai’s Tale by Erik Christian Haugaard is a captivating young adult historical novel set in 16th-century Japan during the Sengoku period, a time of intense civil wars and political upheaval. The story follows the journey of Murakami Harutomo, a young boy who loses his family and status when his father, a samurai, is killed in battle. Harutomo is captured by the victorious warlord Takeda Shingen and given to one of his generals, Lord Akiyama, as a servant. Renamed Taro, he begins his life as a lowly servant but dreams of reclaiming his samurai heritage.

Throughout the novel, Taro’s determination and resilience are tested as he navigates the harsh realities of feudal Japan. He starts in the cookhouse, where he is mentored by the kind cook, Togan. After Togan’s death, Taro is moved to the stables, where he excels in working with horses. His skills and loyalty eventually earn him a position as a messenger, and he gradually rises through the ranks.

The novel explores themes of honor, loyalty, and the samurai code, as Taro learns what it truly means to be a samurai. His journey is marked by personal growth, the forging of important relationships, and the constant struggle to balance his desire for revenge with the samurai ideals of duty and honor.

Haugaard’s meticulous research and vivid storytelling bring the historical context to life, making The Samurai’s Tale not only an engaging adventure but also an insightful look into the culture and values of samurai-era Japan. The novel is a poignant coming-of-age story that highlights the importance of perseverance and the pursuit of one’s dreams, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
