About the Book The Skin I'm In

The Skin I’m In by Sharon G. Flake centers on Maleeka Madison, a seventh-grader who faces daily bullying due to her dark skin and homemade clothes. Her self-esteem is at an all-time low until Miss Saunders, a new English teacher with a distinctive white patch on her face, arrives at the school. Miss Saunders’ confidence and unique appearance challenge Maleeka to see herself differently. Throughout the story, Maleeka navigates complex relationships with her peers, particularly with Charlese, a popular girl who manipulates and bullies her.

As Maleeka begins to express herself through writing, she gains confidence and starts to stand up for herself. The novel explores her journey towards self-acceptance and the realization that true beauty comes from within. The support from Miss Saunders and the development of new friendships play crucial roles in Maleeka’s transformation.

This Page Is Under Construction

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
