About the Book The Wave

The Wave by Todd Strasser is a novel that explores the impact of group dynamics and the seductive power of authoritarianism in a high school setting.

The story begins with a history teacher, Mr. Ross, showing his students a film about the Holocaust, which leads to a discussion on how such atrocities could happen. To help his students understand, Mr. Ross starts an experiment simulating life in Nazi Germany, creating a movement called The Wave, complete with mottos, symbols, and salutes. The experiment quickly spirals out of control as students embrace the movement, sacrificing their individuality and freedom for the sake of power, community, and action.

The novel serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of fascism and the importance of individual freedoms, reminding readers of the responsibility to prevent history’s darkest chapters from repeating.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
