About the Book The Wednesday Wars

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt is a coming-of-age novel set against the backdrop of the 1960s. It follows Holling Hoodhood, a seventh-grader in Long Island, New York, who must spend Wednesday afternoons with his teacher, Mrs. Baker, because he doesn’t attend religious classes like his peers.

Initially believing Mrs. Baker hates him, Holling is put to work reading Shakespeare and performing various tasks, which lead to humorous and disastrous outcomes. As the year progresses, Holling navigates school bullies, family life, and first crushes, all while the Vietnam War and other national events loom in the background.

Through Shakespeare and his interactions with Mrs. Baker, Holling learns valuable life lessons and grows in unexpected ways.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
