About the Book The White Mountains

The White Mountains by John Christopher is the first book in the young adult dystopian series known as The Tripods. The story is set in a future where humanity has been subjugated by enormous mechanical tripods. Thirteen-year-old Will Parker lives in a society that has reverted to medieval norms under the rule of the Tripods, which control humans through surgically implanted Caps when they reach the age of 14. Will’s journey begins when his curiosity about the Caps and his desire for freedom are ignited after his best friend is Capped, changing him completely.

Will encounters a wanderer named Ozymandias, who reveals that he is part of a secret society resisting the Tripods’ control and provides Will with a map to the White Mountains, where this society is based. Will, along with his cousin Henry, embarks on a perilous journey to reach the White Mountains, facing various challenges and the pervasive control of the Tripods. The novel explores themes of freedom, human ingenuity, and the power of teamwork in overcoming obstacles.

Christopher’s narrative also delves into the painful truths about human nature and raises questions about what makes life worth living. The characters in the novel must struggle for autonomy, a freedom that is neither comfortable nor safe, and its acquisition does not guarantee happiness. The story reflects on the flaws of humanity and the mixed blessings of technological achievements, while still holding out hope for the strength of individuals united by the desire to protect freedom of thought and free will.

Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
