About the Book The Widow's Broom

The Widow’s Broom by Chris Van Allsburg is a thought-provoking tale that intertwines the supernatural with a narrative on acceptance and understanding.

The story begins when a witch’s broom loses its magic and she falls from the sky, landing in the garden of Minna Shaw, a kind-hearted widow. Minna takes the injured witch into her home to recover. When the witch leaves, she inadvertently leaves her broom behind, which Minna discovers still possesses some magic.

The broom, capable of sweeping on its own, quickly becomes a helpful presence in Minna’s home, even learning to play simple tunes on the piano. However, the neighbors, the Spiveys, are suspicious of the broom’s abilities and deem it wicked. Their fear and misunderstanding lead them to demand the broom’s destruction after it defends itself against their children’s teasing.

Minna cleverly tricks the Spiveys into believing they have destroyed the broom, but in reality, she has painted it white to disguise it as an ordinary broom. The “ghost” of the broom continues to haunt the Spiveys, ultimately driving them away, while Minna and her broom live peacefully.

The book is not just a Halloween story; it offers powerful lessons about bullying, the fear of the unknown, and the contrasting reactions of bullying and acceptance. It prompts discussions on why people fear what they do not understand and the importance of standing up against such fears. The story’s themes and the characters’ actions provide a rich ground for exploring the concept of theme and supporting evidence within the narrative.

The Widow’s Broom is a testament to Van Allsburg’s ability to craft stories that resonate with readers of all ages, offering depth and moral lessons beneath the surface of a seemingly simple story.
