About the Book The Witches

The Witches by Roald Dahl is a dark fantasy novel that introduces readers to a world where child-hating societies of witches secretly exist in every country. The story is set partly in Norway and partly in England, and follows the experiences of a young English boy and his Norwegian grandmother.

After the boy becomes an orphan due to a tragic accident, he is sent to live with his grandmother, who is knowledgeable about witches. She educates him on how to identify a witch, despite their ordinary appearances. Their lives take a turn when they accidentally book a stay at a hotel hosting the witches’ annual convention, led by the Grand High Witch herself.

During the convention, the boy learns of a plan to turn all the children in England into mice using a magical potion. Unfortunately, he is discovered eavesdropping and is turned into a mouse, along with another boy named Bruno Jenkins. Despite their new forms, they retain their human intelligence and speech, which they use to devise a counterattack against the witches.

With the help of his grandmother, the boy manages to turn the witches into mice, leading to their extermination by the hotel staff. The boy and his grandmother then embark on an international mission to eradicate witches worldwide, using the Grand High Witch’s money and a list of witches in other countries.

The novel explores themes of good versus evil, courage and resilience, and the deceptive nature of appearances. It also delves into the paradoxical consequences of wishes and the importance of accepting one’s circumstances. The Witches remains a beloved story for its imaginative plot, humor, and the underlying message about the power of love and determination.
