About the Book There Are No Children Here

There Are No Children Here by Alex Kotlowitz is a gripping nonfiction account that follows the lives of two young brothers, Lafeyette and Pharoah Rivers, over two years (1987-1989) as they grow up in the Henry Horner Homes, a public housing complex in Chicago. The book paints a vivid picture of their daily struggles with poverty, gang violence, and social isolation.

Through the eyes of Lafeyette, aged twelve, and Pharoah, aged nine, readers witness the impact of a hostile environment on children’s lives and the resilience they muster to navigate through it. Their mother, LaJoe Rivers, despite the crumbling community and the disintegration of her family due to drugs and crime, remains a pillar of strength, striving to protect her children from the dangers that surround them.

The narrative is a powerful testament to the innocence lost and the harsh realities faced by children in such communities.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
