Practical, flexible, and standards-based with step-by-step plans for the whole novel unit, my LitPlan Novel Study is especially helpful to new teachers or veteran teachers teaching Treasure Island for the first time.

18 Step-by-Step Daily Lessons guide you and your students through this novel study. Assignments and Activities are planned for each day of the novel unit.

Vocabulary Worksheets that focus on meaning in context and dictionary definitions go with each reading assignment.

Comprehension Questions and Quizzes follow the reading assignments, so you know if your students are keeping up with their reading and if they are understanding what they are reading.

Writing Assignments are sprinkled throughout this novel study for Treasure Island, too! Detailed writing assignment sheets guide students' writing.

  • The first is to inform: students work together to create a report detailing the research completed and information to be included in the group presentation assignment.
  • The second is to persuade and to exercise creativity:  students will compose a composition in which they have discovered a treasure map and the argument they would use to convince their parent(s) to support them in the hunt for the treasure.
  • The third is to express personal opinions: students write a critical review of the book and the film version of Treasure Island.

One lesson is also devoted to Leveled Critical Thinking Questions:

  • Interpretive Questions require students to simply interpret facts that are given.
  • Critical Questions require students to think deeply to develop answers that go beyond what is in the text.
  • Personal Response Questions have no right or wrong answer; students formulate and give their own opinions.

A Nonfiction Reading Assignment is incorporated into this novel study unit for Treasure Island. In this unit this assignment is a group project.  Each group will research the assigned topic, complete the worksheet, and create a 15-20 presentation.

Not enough student exercises. Reply from Mary: Please contact me (link a the top of the website) and let me know what kind of exercises you were looking for. There are writing assignments and a cooperative group project, different suggestions for discussion/discussion groups, review games and activities, and there's a list of eleven extra activities to do you could choose from in the Unit Resources section of the LitPlan.
