About the Book Tunes For Bears To Dance To

Tunes For Bears To Dance To by Robert Cormier is a young adult novella that delves into the moral complexities faced by an 11-year-old boy named Henry. After the tragic death of his brother, Henry’s family moves to a new town to start afresh. Here, Henry befriends Mr. Levine, an elderly Holocaust survivor who is carving a wooden replica of his hometown destroyed during the war.

Henry works for Mr. Hairston, the duplicitous manager of the local grocery store, who is revealed to harbor racist views and manipulates Henry into a sinister plot. Mr. Hairston promises Henry a headstone for his brother’s grave in exchange for destroying Mr. Levine’s cherished carving. Faced with this moral dilemma, Henry must decide whether to succumb to Mr. Hairston’s demands or stand up for what is right.

The story explores themes such as the inadequacy of language, the everyday nature of evil, and the inescapability of the past. It is a poignant examination of hatred, prejudice, and manipulation, challenging readers to consider how they would behave in the face of evil. The novella is a masterful portrayal of the struggles between good and evil and the choices that define us.
